Welcome

Welcome, and how to use this

If you read nothing else:
  • Key contact info for phone numbers, addresses, doctors, and how to find the house.
  • The schedule for Week 1 or Week 2 shows who has Hattie, and Matilda, hour by hour.
  • Matilda is dairy-free and peanut-free. Use the dairy-free butter and milk in the fridge for her plate.
  • Leash Pretzel whenever a kid is walking around with food in her hand. He grabs from little hands.

Skim this once on arrival, then come back when a specific question comes up. The week schedule is the source of truth for who has which kid. The full printable version, with every venue and craft, is the print page.

If a kid is sick (not an emergency)

Fever, throwing up, a rash, an ear that hurts:
  • Children's Tylenol and Motrin live in the kitchen, middle drawer to the right of the dishwasher. The children's thermometer is in Hattie's room on the diaper cart next to the dresser. Dose by weight per the bottle; when in doubt, call before dosing.
  • Call Dr. Chase's office first, (617) 522-3100, they have an after-hours nurse line.
  • For a same-day look that is not an emergency (ear infection, mild dehydration), use PM Pediatrics, Dedham (719 Providence Hwy, Dedham, MA 02026), not the Children's ER. Boston Children's ER is the second option if PM is closed.
  • 911 or the Children's ER only for trouble breathing, a serious allergic reaction, a head injury, or a fever in a baby. Matilda's allergy plan is in the warning box above.

All about Hattie

Almost 4. Verbal, curious, into Bluey and Daniel Tiger. School is at Croft School JP, 3815 Washington St, Roslindale, MA 02131 (on the JP line), through Friday June 12. ~5 min drive from the house, can be 10 min with traffic.

MiraLAX: half a scoop, dissolved fully in milk or juice, every morning with breakfast. If milk, syrup choice (chocolate or strawberry). MiraLAX lives in a glass jar on the kitchen counter; the scoop is in or on top of the jar.
Screens: aim to keep them light. Bluey and Daniel Tiger live on YouTube Kids, Netflix, or Amazon Prime on Hattie's iPad (passcode 071722). Try to avoid screens. Cap at 2 hours total for the day, off 30 minutes before bed.

Daily schedule

  • 7 to 7:30Wake up, get dressed, breakfast. Special K with Strawberry cereal. MiraLAX drink (see below).
  • 8:00School drop off (Tue Jun 9 through Fri Jun 12, see Week 1 for details). Drop-off is at 8:00 but the window runs to 8:30.
  • ~10:00Snack.
  • 12:00Lunch.
  • ~3:00Snack.
  • 5:30 to 7:00Dinner.
  • After dinnerPotty.
  • ThenBath (~15 min).
  • ThenBooks.
  • 7:00, no later than 8:00Bed.

Morning routine

  1. Wake her up gently if she is not already up.
  2. Pick out clothes together. Let her choose between two options.
  3. Bathroom, then breakfast. Half a scoop of MiraLAX in her drink.
  4. Brush teeth, brush hair, shoes on.
  5. Backpack: make sure spare underwear and spare pants are in the main pocket. Put morning snacks in the front pocket. Puppy lives in the backpack on school days.
  6. Send a clean water bottle with water.

Evening routine

  1. Bath after dinner, about 15 minutes. Sam usually does this. Shampoo and conditioner every other night. Every night, either conditioner or leave-in detangler, then brush.
  2. Clean her tushy with a washcloth. She can do it with help.
  3. Pajamas, teeth, two books.
  4. Bubbles and Piggy must be in her bed. Puppy is optional and usually lives in her backpack during the school week.
  5. Turn on the sound machine (lives on her dresser).
  6. Lights out by 7:30 most nights.

Potty rules

  • Potty right after waking up.
  • Potty again before leaving the house, every time.
  • Potty again as soon as you get home.
  • On any outing, the backpack carries a spare pair of underwear and a spare pair of pants. Accidents happen.

Before any outing

  • Sunscreen on both kids before you leave. It lives in the baskets hanging next to the garage door. Reapply at any splash pad or pond.
  • Bug spray for the Arboretum, ponds, or any woods. It is in the closet near the back door. Quick tick check after wooded spots (Blue Hills, World's End).
  • Each kid leaves with a water bottle and a snack pouch. Hattie's spare underwear and pants already live in her backpack.
  • Leash Pretzel before snacks come out, and keep kid snacks zipped until you are away from him.
  • Matilda naps in the early afternoon. Morning outing, home by lunch, is the pattern that works.
  • Stroller is in the garage. We only have a single, not a double. Hattie's helmet and scooter are in the garage too.

All about Matilda

Age 2. Gets along well with Hattie, and the two of them play together easily. She arrives with Ross on Monday June 15.

If you read nothing else about Matilda:
  • Dairy-free and peanut-free on her plate. Adults eat normally.
  • Dairy-free butter and dairy-free milk are in the fridge for her portions.
  • If she has a reaction: call Ross first, 407-765-0420. Then 911 if she needs the ER.

Nap

Confirm her nap window with Ross when they arrive.

Food: dairy-free and peanut-free

She gets a dairy-free path on every meal, either by modification (use the dairy-free butter and milk in the fridge) or a small separate plate. Peanuts stay out of her plate. The rest of the house can eat normally.

How she plays

She and Hattie play well together as a team. Give each kid her own supplies for any activity. Sharing one basket or racing usually ends in tears.

Pretzel, the dog

Cavapoo, barks at most things. Friendly once introduced. Pretzel is crated when he is alone at home.

Feeding

Walks

Leash him whenever a kid is walking around with food in her hand. He grabs food from little hands. This is the one rule that matters most with two preschoolers around.

Things to do

Things to do

Around town

Grouped by type. Distances are driving miles from 51 Catherine St.

Two rules for outings: Matilda naps in the early afternoon, so morning outings home by lunch work best. And parking: the zoo, Arboretum, and suburban spots are easy and free or cheap. Splash pads + water: call 311 or check boston.gov to confirm any municipal splash feature (Billings, Stony Brook) is running before you drive over. They sometimes open late in the season. Week 1 has no at-home water backup; the backyard slide does not go up until Saturday June 20.

Crafts and backyard fun

Mud Kitchen Menu. Cook mud "soup" in bowls or a muffin tin, then wash hands and draw the menu at the patio table (or just serve it to you).
Story Cards. Draw pictures on index cards or jar lids ahead of time, then pull them out one by one to build a story together.
Lily Pad Jump. Letters on paper plates (each weighted with a rock) or tape squares. Kids jump like frogs to the one you call, by letter or by sound.
Plant Part Hunt. Each kid a basket. Hunt the yard together for a root, stem, leaf, and flower. A berry or seed-head counts as fruit.
Daniel Tiger Mail. Give a prompt ("draw Pretzel your favorite snack"). Each kid draws and writes a note. Mail it in a decorated shoebox.
Chalk Number Garden. On the driveway or patio, each kid draws a number and adds that many chalk petals.
Letter Card Hunt. Write letters on upside-down cups or rocks (mostly ones she knows, a couple of Y, Z, lowercase mixed in). Hide around the yard. Kids find and name them.
Cereal Necklaces. Thread O-cereal on a pipe cleaner ("jewelry for Pretzel's tea party"). Pull a number card 1 to 5, add that many. Keep a snack bowl of extra cereal nearby.
Freeze and Dance. Play music. When you pause it, call out a shape ("tree," "starfish," "turtle," "frog") and the kids freeze in that shape. Restart the music, they dance again. Let Hattie pick the song.
Journal of Our Day. Ask "what was your favorite part." Kid draws it, you write her exact words underneath. A few times a week, not daily.
Story Tent. Blanket fort. You start a story and each kid adds one thing, or read books with a flashlight.
Garden Diary. Water a fast-growing bean sprout in a clear cup. Look close. See what changed since yesterday.
Mud Letter Writing. Smooth out shaving cream on a tray (or wet sand outside). Write letters and names with a finger. Swipe, repeat.
Sound Basket Sort. Call a sound. Kids run and grab any object that starts with it and drop it in the basket together.
Flower Shop. Pretend shop with picked weeds and dandelions in cups. Arrange bouquets and "sell" them, counting buttons for the price.
Ice Rescue. Freeze little animals or letter magnets in a bowl of ice. Kids free them with warm water and squirt bottles, naming each one.
Bluey Keepy Uppy. Keep a balloon off the floor as a team. Count each bop out loud.

Meals and what's for dinner

Two weeks of dinners. Week 1 is Sam cooking most nights, with two evenings out or take-out. Week 2 alternates simple home-cooked nights with pre-ordered meals. Recipes scale to the adults eating. The kids graze.

Matilda dietary path: every Week 2 dinner has a Matilda-safe (dairy-free and peanut-free) option, named on the meal card. Use the dairy-free butter and milk in the fridge for her plate. Adults eat the regular version. If she has a reaction: call Ross first, 407-765-0420. Then 911 if she needs the ER.

Week 1 (Sam cooks, 3 adults plus Hattie)

Tue Jun 9 - easy night (Hope arrives ~7:30 PM)
no cook

Light dinner at home after Sam picks Hope up. Pizza or leftovers.

Wed Jun 10 - Sheet-Pan BBQ Chicken Meatballs + Broccoli + Blistered Tomatoes + Cheesy Spinach Rice
30 min, serves 4

Caroline Chambers. Kid-friendly, low cleanup. The meatballs have egg + panko + sharp cheddar as binder (not just chicken and BBQ sauce). The full dish includes a cheesy spinach rice side using two 10-oz bags of frozen white rice.

recipe
Thu Jun 11 - Sheet-Pan Poblano Steak Fajitas
25 min, cook night (cook 1.5x for leftovers)

Caroline Chambers. Sam: cook the full 3 lb of steak (about 1.5x the recipe) so Hope has solid leftovers for Fri night. Pack the extra steak + peppers in one container in the fridge for Friday.

recipe
Fri Jun 12 - Section F party (Sam and Chris out, Hope solo with Hattie)
leftovers night

Sam and Chris: dinner at the Section F party, nothing to plan at home.

Hope: Thursday's steak fajita leftovers are in the fridge. Caroline Chambers' suggestions for leftover fajita meat: fajita quesadillas (warm the steak + peppers, melt cheese in a tortilla on the stove), fajita salads (steak + peppers over chopped romaine with lime, avocado, tortilla chips), or burrito bowls (rice, beans, steak, peppers, salsa, guacamole). All ingredients are in the house.

Hattie: she's welcome to a deconstructed fajita plate (plain steak strips, peppers on the side, a warm tortilla), but if she pushes back, frozen chicken nuggets and frozen pizza are in the freezer as the always-yes backups. Nuggets bake at 400 for 10 to 12 min; pizza per box.

Sat Jun 13 - Quick family dinner at home before Giulia
tight 6 to 7 PM window

Family is not eating at the reunion. Everyone (Sam, Chris, Hattie, Hope) eats together at home between ~6 and 7, then Sam and Chris leave for Giulia at 7. Hope handles bath, books, and bedtime.

What's available: whatever steak + peppers are still left from Thursday (fajita-quesadilla assembly is the fastest, 10 min on the stove), or order a pizza on the drive home from the reunion so it lands ~6:15. Frozen chicken nuggets are the Hattie backup if she's not in a fajita mood.

Sun Jun 14 - Good Soup + crusty bread
~90 min total (20 active, 70 simmer)

Caroline Chambers' most-visited recipe. Hearty: tomato + harissa base with lentils, grains, and Italian sausage. Serves 6 to 8. Start early, simmer most of the way through.

Week 2 (5 adults plus Hattie and Matilda, mix of cook and prepared)

Mon Jun 15 - Reheat tray (no cook)
welcome night

Roche Bros West Roxbury tray (1800 Centre St, ~10 min from home, open Sundays 8 AM to 8 PM, (617) 469-5747). Sam picks up Sunday 2-4 PM: 1 rotisserie chicken, 1 lb roasted vegetables, 1 lb mashed or pasta side, 1 large salad, 1 baguette. Lives on the second-shelf fridge. Pearlmans or Hope reheat.

Matilda safe: plain rotisserie chicken + plain bread + cucumber. Skip any side with a creamy sauce.
Tue Jun 16 - Sheet-Pan Miso-Ginger Salmon with green beans + jasmine rice on the side
1 hour (20 min active, 40 min inactive + broil)

Recipe serves 2–4; scale marinade to 1.5x for 5 filets. Marinade (1.5x): 3 tbsp white miso, 3 tbsp maple syrup, 3 tbsp olive oil, juice of 1 lime, 1.5 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce, 1.5-inch grated fresh ginger. Marinate salmon 15 min at room temp or up to 24 hours in the fridge (worth doing the night before). Roast at 275°F skin-side down for 20–30 min until 125°F (medium-rare) or 145°F (well done). Meanwhile toss ~1.5 lb green beans with 1.5 tbsp olive oil, 1.5 tsp sesame seeds, salt + pepper. After salmon comes off the pan, broil green beans on the top rack for 3–5 min until bright and just charring.

Recipe-as-written uses cauliflower rice + snap peas on the sheet pan. We are subbing: jasmine rice on the side (cook on the stove), and green beans on the sheet pan alongside the salmon (green beans are sanctioned by the recipe as a snap-pea sub). Naturally dairy-free and peanut-free — same plate for everyone including Matilda.

Matilda safe: naturally dairy-free and peanut-free. Same plate as everyone else.
recipe
Wed Jun 17 - Greek International Food Market pre-order
prepared night

5204 Washington St, West Roxbury. Grilled chicken, rice, salads, hummus.

Matilda safe: plain grilled chicken + rice + cucumber. Skip the tzatziki.
Thu Jun 18 - Sam's Hattie-Approved Beef Chili (Pioneer Woman riff, Fritos edition) + Dairy-Free Skillet Cornbread
~90 min, cook night

Pioneer-Woman riff Hattie has loved before, made dairy-free and peanut-free, with a cast-iron cornbread on the side. Scaled to 1.5x so there's a Fri lunch buffer and seconds at the table are safe. The cornbread is plenty for the group as written; do not scale the cornbread.

Chili (about 85 min, 1.5x recipe): brown 3 lb ground beef with the chopped onion and 3 minced garlic cloves. Drain fat. Stir in 12 oz tomato sauce, 1.5 tbsp extra tomato sauce or ketchup, 3 cups beef broth, 2.25 tbsp chili powder, 1.5 tsp cumin, 1.5 tsp oregano, 0.75 tsp cayenne (optional), and salt to taste. Cover and simmer low for 1 hour. Uncover, stir in 0.75 cup crushed Fritos, then fold in 2 cans kidney beans and 2 cans pinto beans (drained but NOT rinsed; the starch is the point). Simmer uncovered for 10 min.

Cornbread (about 35 min, 450°F oven): whisk the dry ingredients: 1 cup yellow cornmeal, 0.5 cup flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp baking powder. In a jug, whisk 1 cup Silk soy milk with 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar and let sit 5 min to curdle, then add 0.5 cup more soy milk, 1 egg, and 0.5 tsp baking soda. Pour wet into dry, stir gently, then stir in 0.25 cup melted DF plant butter. In the 10-inch cast iron (lower cabinet, left of the stove), melt 2 tbsp DF plant butter over high heat until bubbly. Pour the batter in and bake 20 to 25 min until the top is golden.

Timing (work backwards from the planned meal time): at T minus 90 min, start the chili (brown, add base, cover). At T minus 35 min, start the cornbread batter and put the cast iron on to preheat. At T minus 25 min, the cornbread goes in the oven. At T minus 10 min, uncover the chili and stir in the crushed Fritos plus both cans of each bean; let it finish uncovered. At T equals 0, the cornbread comes out of the oven the same beat the chili is done. Plate.

Toppings on the table: shredded cheddar, sour cream, extra Fritos. Plate Matilda's bowl first and set her cornbread square aside before the cheese and sour cream hit the table. Optional: a small Tofutti DF sour cream container so Matilda gets the full chili-bar experience without contamination risk.

Matilda safe: chili is naturally dairy-free and peanut-free (no cheese or sour cream on her bowl). Cornbread uses Silk soy milk and DF plant butter, so the same square as everyone else, no modification.
Fri Jun 19 - Klin Thai takeout
prepared night

1894 Centre St, West Roxbury. (617) 477-3348.

Matilda safe (allergy-critical): do not rely on the restaurant. Make her plate at home: plain steamed rice + plain pan-cooked or grilled chicken, no sauce. Thai kitchens use peanut and tree-nut oils heavily, so keep her portion fully separate. Call Klin to ask, but the home plate is the plan, not a backup.
Sat Jun 20 - Beef & Broccoli (and lots of other veggies)
~30 min, cook night

Caroline Chambers. Serves 4–6 as written; fine for 5 adults with generous rice. Sauce: whisk 1/3 cup hot water, 6 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp sesame oil, 2 tbsp honey, 1.5 tbsp cornstarch, 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes — set aside. Stir-fry 1 red bell pepper, 2 sliced carrots, 1 lb broccoli florets, 4 grated garlic cloves, and 1-inch grated ginger in 2 tbsp olive oil for 4–5 min; remove to a bowl. Add 2 more tbsp oil, sear 1 lb thinly sliced beef sirloin 2 min, then pour in sauce and vegetables, simmer 3–4 min until sauce thickens. Serve over rice with sesame seeds.

Matilda safe: naturally dairy-free and peanut-free. Pull her portion before adding the sauce (which has red pepper flakes) — serve her plain beef + broccoli + carrots over rice, or just give her plain rice and the veggies. Skip sesame seeds on hers if any concern.
Sun Jun 21 - Sam's birthday + Father's Day (out)
no cook

Dinner at the birthday outing. Home backup: pizza delivery. If anyone pre-orders Saturday, Tutto Italiano (1889 River St, Hyde Park) is the better option -- it's closed Sundays so the order has to happen the day before.

Matilda safe: if pizza, plain cheese-free flatbread or DF cheese pizza. If Tutto pre-order, plain pasta + marinara + dairy-free butter on the side.

Grocery list
